NAMA Chairman joins NAMA staff on a fact-finding mission to Ethiopia

NAMA Chairman Rick L. Schwein, Senior Vice President, Grain Millers, Inc., joined NAMA’s trade consultant Paul Green and Director of Government Relations, Jane DeMarchi, on a trip to Ethiopia to gather information about how NAMA products enhance the food aid program.

As in past food aid missions with NAMA officers, the opportunity for the NAMA Chairman to see firsthand the use of high nutrition grain based foods in development and relief programs will enable Rick to be a more effective advocate for NAMA priorities. The team visited an urban Home for the Destitute and Dying run by the Missionaries of Charity that helps more than 5000 people a day who are victims of HIV/AIDS, debilitating illness, orphans and destitute women. To view the work of Mother Teresa’s order is a life changing experience of which NAMA is proud to be a part. The group also viewed NAMA products being distributed as part of HIV/AIDS treatments, agricultural development programs and school feeding programs.

World Food Day recognized by NAMA at Broken Bread event
NAMA has worked with World Vision's subsidiary Acting On AIDS over the last year to increase awareness on college campuses of the link between nutrition and HIV/AIDS. Hundreds of 'Broken Bread' events have been held on campuses across the country. At Broken Bread events, corn soy blend (CSB) donated by NAMA members is served to thousands of students. At the same time, the students are given short stories of individuals affected by HIV.

Corn soy blend is served to Broken Bread event participants in the Senate Caucus Room.

On World Food Day, NAMA cosponsored a similar event in the Russell Senate Caucus Room for Senators and staff called “Get a Taste of Hunger.” NAMA president Betsy Faga spoke at the event. Faga thanked the Senate for their support of food aid, while pointing out the need for more resources.

Acting on AIDS brought about 100 students to assist in the effort. The event was hosted by the Senate Hunger Caucus and co-hosted by NAMA, World Vision, Friends of the World Food Program, and the Alliance for Food Aid.

Additional cuts in methyl bromide use unwarranted
In comments submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about the amount of methyl bromide needed for 2008, NAMA pressed EPA to not impose additional cuts in the industry’s allocation of methyl bromide, citing the dramatic reduction in the use of the fumigant by NAMA members.

Once the US request has been approved by the United Nations Environmental Program, NAMA wrote, “EPA should accept their decision. If our economic competitors believe a particular quantity of methyl bromide is necessary for US users, and take positive action to approve that quantity, the US government should not second-guess their decision and allocate a lesser amount.”

NAMA increases participation on the GFF Marketing Committee
NAMA members Peter Levangie, Bay State Milling Company; John Miller, Miller Milling Company, and Jason Hines, 21st Century Processing are new members of the Grain Foods Foundation (GFF) Marketing Committee. They join NAMA members Don Brown, ConAgra Mills; Sheryl Stennett, Horizon Milling and NAMA president Betsy Faga, who are currently on the committee. The purpose of the committee is to provide GFF with a strategic overview of campaign plans and to provide feedback on the creatives under development by the public relations firm.

Grain Foods Foundation revamps logo
In an effort to better convey the link between grains and vitality, the Grain Foods Foundation (GFF) created a new logo. The logo is used by members to highlight the grain content of their products. In order to qualify for use of the symbol, products must be 50 percent grains by weight.
