Canadian Oat Researchers
to receive a half million in funding

Washington, D.C. - July 24, 2008 – NAMA learned yesterday that Saskatchewan oat growers have committed to invest $500,000 in University of Saskatchewan research on high-yielding and disease-resistant oat varieties. NAMA congratulates them for their vision and commitment. This investment will give oat researchers a much needed boost to continue and expand their ongoing research efforts.

Oats are an important commodity in the Canadian agricultural economy. Canadian oats are also important to the U.S. as virtually 100 percent of the oats consumed in the U.S. are grown in Canada. Hence, the fruit of this research will benefit Canadian farmers, processors and exporters, as well as U.S. importers, processors and consumers.

The Saskatchewan Oat Development Commission (SODC) will provide $100,000 per year over five years to the U of S Crop Development Centre (CDC) and plant sciences department to hire research technicians, train summer students, and fund graduate students in oat agronomy, pathology, plant breeding, and genomics.

For many years NAMA has supported oat research in the U.S. and Canada. This month we brought together researchers, growers and millers from the U.S. and Canada for the first time to discuss optimizing our resources for advancing new technologies in oat research.

NAMA is the trade association representing 49 companies that operate 170 wheat, oat and corn mills in 38 states and Canada. Their collective production capacity exceeds 160 million pounds of product each day, more than 95 percent of the total industry production.
