Releases Statement on Biotechnology
WASHINGTON, D.C – May 21, 2001 - The North American Millers' Association (NAMA) released the attached statement on biotechnology, supporting food biotechnology as a tool that can improve product quality, safety and sanitation; increase production efficiency; allow more judicious use of agricultural chemicals; and help meet growing domestic and world food demand.
In the statement, NAMA recommends approvals in major markets, reasonable thresholds, and availability of testing methods for inbound grain and cautions against using identity preservation as a solution to seamless marketing of biotech-based grains. The statement on biotechnology recognizes agricultural biotechnology should find its place in an efficient, free marketplace.
NAMA's statement on biotechnology was released during a April 25 meeting with U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman. The April 25 meeting was part of NAMA's government relations conference held every April in Washington, D.C.
NAMA is located in Washington, D.C. The nonprofit trade association representing the grain milling industry enables its members to grow and prosper by providing leadership through education, information and advocacy to members, policy makers, customers and suppliers in the areas of regulation and legislation, trade, supply and consumption. NAMA has 44 member companies operating 174 wheat, corn, oat and rye mills in 37 states and Canada. The aggregate production capacity of NAMA's membership is more than 160 million pounds of product daily, which is about 90% of the total U.S. capacity.
