Bio – Ricardo Carvajal

Mr. Carvajal is Of Counsel with Hyman, Phelps & McNamara, P.C., a law firm based in Washington, D.C. that provides counsel and representation on all product categories regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  He previously served as Associate Chief Counsel for Foods in FDA’s Office of Chief Counsel.  His practice focuses on regulation of foods, including functional foods, medical foods, and dietary supplements.  He has substantial experience with GMP and HACCP compliance issues, and with a wide array of labeling and advertising compliance issues, including those that arise from the use of health, nutrient content, structure/function, and disease claims.  He has particular expertise in the regulation of products derived through biotechnology and nanotechnology.  Mr. Carvajal is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists, the Food and Drug Law Institute, and the American Bar Association, for which he has authored numerous publications on various aspects of food law and regulation.  He is also a member of the European Food Law Association.  He holds a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law and an M.S. in Biology from the University of Michigan.  He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia.  Mr. Carvajal is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana.  For more information on the latest developments in U.S food and drug law, please visit the Hyman, Phelps & McNamara website at www.hpm.com and the firm’s blog at www.fdalawblog.net
