The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Harry S. Truman Building
2201 C Street, NW
Washington, DC 20520
The North American Millers’ Association commends you on the historic breakthrough announced yesterday with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to suspend nuclear activities. As the US millers of wheat, corn, oats and high nutrition fortified foods for food assistance, NAMA welcomes the provision of 240,000 metric tons of US nutritional assistance as part of this agreement. We stand ready to assist in any way possible to provide the best US food to the US food aid program to meet the DPRK population’s needs.
We encourage you to provide a large portion of this food aid in the form of high nutrition products such as blended and fortified grain products. Enriched wheat flour and Corn Soy Blend are examples of products that are cost-effective methods of providing timely nutrition to a broad population of North Koreans who are malnourished. This is an opportunity to demonstrate the priority the Administration has placed on nutrition both in US and international food interventions. Such value-added foods encourage economic activity in the US and provide jobs to the US economy, while giving the highest possible nutrition impact for the food aid.
Thank you for your consideration of these points as you formulate the plans for the US government’s response to this encouraging signal from the DPRK.
Dr. Raj Shah, Administrator, Food For Peace/USAID
The Honorable Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture, Foreign Agricultural Service/USDA
